The Story: Unfinished Business in Centurion

Under head coach Sourav Ganguly, the former India captain, Pretoria Capitals went from fifth place to the final in 2026. They came within one win of a first SA20 title, but the Sunrisers chased 159 with four balls to spare, despite a brilliant century from Dewald Brevis.

Ganguly has not hidden what this season is about. "We were in the final last season, and we did not finish the job," he said before the auction. "This time, we have come back stronger."

For readers new to the competition: the SA20 is South Africa's franchise T20 league. Six city-based teams play each other twice, 10 games each, and the top four reach the playoffs. In T20 cricket each team bats for up to 20 overs (an over is six legal deliveries), so a match lasts about three and a half hours.

Captain Keshav Maharaj, who led the side last season, credited Ganguly with building the team spirit behind that run. "Sourav was amazing at that," he said. "We had a lot of guys that bought into what we tried to achieve."

The Talking Points

Andre Russell as the Wildcard

Andre Russell is the Capitals' wildcard, a special extra signing each team can make on top of its regular player allocation. Few players in T20 history hit the ball harder, and he also bowls fast at the death (the last few overs of an innings).

Phil Salt Is Back

England opener Phil Salt returns to Centurion as a pre-auction signing, along with Australia's Matthew Short. Together with Sherfane Rutherford and Russell, they give the Capitals serious power.

Two Proteas Batters at the Auction

The Capitals filled their final five places at the October 7 auction. The biggest buy was Rassie van der Dussen for R500,000, after four seasons with MI Cape Town. Proteas captain Temba Bavuma joined for R200,000, along with West Indians Keemo Paul and Ackeem Auguste and South African Josh Breed.

Who Left

England all-rounder Craig Overton moved from the Capitals to Sunrisers Eastern Cape at the auction.

Dewald Brevis: Scored a century in last season's final. One of the cleanest strikers of a cricket ball in South Africa.

Andre Russell: The wildcard. Can change a game in a handful of balls with the bat, then bowl the tough overs at the end.

Phil Salt: An aggressive opener who attacks from the very first ball of the powerplay (the first six overs, when fielding restrictions apply).
