The Story: A Big-Name Squad Chasing a First Title

On paper, few T20 teams anywhere look as strong as Durban's Super Giants. Their squad includes Jos Buttler, Kane Williamson, Sunil Narine, Liam Livingstone, Devon Conway and now Sam Curran, alongside South African stars Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen and Gerald Coetzee.

Results have not matched the names. Durban finished fifth of six last season and are still chasing their first SA20 title.

For readers new to the competition: the SA20 is South Africa's franchise T20 league. Six city-based teams play each other twice, 10 games each, and the top four reach the playoffs. In T20 cricket each team bats for up to 20 overs (an over is six legal deliveries), so a match lasts about three and a half hours.

New signing Tony de Zorzi knows the tournament well from his time at Sunrisers Eastern Cape. "It's a bit more of a marathon than a sprint," he said of the competition. "Local knowledge is going to be important for us."

Sam Curran Arrives

England all-rounder Sam Curran is Durban's headline addition, moving from MI Cape Town. He bowls left-arm seam and bats anywhere from the top to the lower middle order, which gives the team more balance.

Klaasen as the Wildcard

Heinrich Klaasen, one of the most destructive middle-order hitters in the world, is Durban's wildcard, a special extra signing each team can make on top of its regular player allocation.
