The Story: Afghanistan's Busy Autumn at Home in the UAE
Afghanistan play their home international cricket in the UAE, and this autumn they are hosting a packed programme there. It starts with a one-off Test against Bangladesh (October 9 to 13), moves on to this ODI tri-series, and ends with three T20Is and two Tests against Zimbabwe that run into mid-November.
For readers new to the format: a One Day International (ODI) gives each team 50 overs to bat (an over is six legal deliveries), and a match is played in a single day, usually lasting around eight hours. A tri-series is a short tournament between three teams.
There is plenty at stake. The 2027 Cricket World Cup is an ODI tournament in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, so every 50-over match now doubles as World Cup preparation.
Zimbabwe Cricket Managing Director Givemore Makoni called it "an important tour for Zimbabwe, offering our players high-quality competition across all three formats." Bangladesh Cricket Board CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury described Afghanistan as "a formidable Afghanistan side that has traditionally performed well in these conditions."
How the Tri-Series Works
- League stage (3 matches): Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe each play the other two once.
- Points table: the two teams with the most points go through. If teams finish level, net run rate (a measure of how quickly a team scores compared with its opponents) usually separates them.
- Final: the top two meet on Friday, October 23.
Because there are only three league games, one defeat can be enough to knock a team out.
