No West Indies, No Namibia (Yet): Everything About the 2027 World Cup Draw
When and where is the 2027 World Cup?
From October 2 to November 21, 2027, across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. There are 14 teams, 57 matches and 12 venues, with the final at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.
When is India vs Pakistan?
Sunday, October 10, 2027 in Johannesburg, in Group A. The two could meet again in the Super 7 stage on November 7 in Cape Town.
What is new about the format?
The old Super Six is gone. A new Super 7 stage replaces it, with seven teams playing each other once before the semi-finals.
The Story: The Road to Johannesburg Is Set
The ICC has revealed the full schedule for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, and it has everything: a rematch of the last final on the opening day of the group stage, India vs Pakistan on a Sunday in Johannesburg, and a new format designed to keep the big teams playing deep into the tournament.
For readers new to cricket: the Cricket World Cup is the sport's biggest prize, held every four years and played in the ODI format, where each team bats for up to 50 overs. Australia are the defending champions after beating India in the 2023 final in Ahmedabad.
It is also the first time the World Cup has been played in Africa since 2003, when South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya co-hosted. This time Namibia joins South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The Groups
| Group A | Group B |
| India | New Zealand |
| Australia | South Africa |
| Pakistan | Sri Lanka |
| Afghanistan | England |
| Zimbabwe | Bangladesh |
| Qualifier A | Qualifier B |
Group A is the heavyweight group. It contains the last two finalists, India and Australia, plus Pakistan, Afghanistan (who beat several big teams at the 2023 World Cup) and co-hosts Zimbabwe.
Group B puts co-hosts South Africa alongside England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
How the New Format Works
The tournament has four stages.
1. The Super Series (October 2 to 6)
Before the main event, three teams play a mini-tournament in Windhoek, Namibia. These are the teams that finished second, third and fourth at the Cricket World Cup Qualifier. They play each other once, and the winner fills the Qualifier B spot in Group B. The team that wins the Qualifier outright goes straight into Group A as Qualifier A.
2. The Group Stage (October 7 to 24)
Two groups of six, with each team playing the other five once. The top three in each group, plus the better fourth-placed team across the two groups, go through. That is seven teams in total.
3. The Super 7 (October 25 to November 14)
This is the brand-new stage. The seven qualifiers start from zero, with no points carried over, and each plays the other six once. The top four reach the semi-finals.
To help fans plan travel, the ICC has pre-seeded the Super 7 fixtures. For example, India are "A1" and Australia "A2". If a seeded team fails to qualify, the team that takes its place simply inherits its fixtures.
4. The Knockouts (November 17 to 21)
The semi-finals are 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd, in Cape Town on November 17 and Tshwane on November 18. The final is in Johannesburg on November 21. All three knockout games have a reserve day in case of rain.
The Big Storylines
Two Big Names Still Have to Qualify
The ten teams already confirmed are the two hosts, South Africa and Zimbabwe, plus the top eight sides on the ICC ODI rankings at the September 30, 2026 cut-off. Two names are notably missing.
West Indies, champions in 1975 and 1979, are not among them, which means they will have to come through the Qualifier to reach the tournament.
Namibia are co-hosts, but only South Africa and Zimbabwe qualified automatically as hosts. Namibia will stage the Super Series and three group games in Windhoek, but they must also earn their place through the Qualifier.
India vs Pakistan, Possibly Twice
The game everyone circles first is India vs Pakistan on October 10 in Johannesburg. Under the Super 7 seeding, if both qualify, they would meet again on November 7 in Cape Town.
A Rematch to Start
The group stage opens on October 7 in Cape Town with India vs Australia, a repeat of the 2023 final.
New Ground at Victoria Falls
The new Mosi-oa-Tunya Stadium in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, hosts its first ever World Cup game when India play Zimbabwe on October 24, the last match of the group stage. It then hosts three Super 7 games.
