Rahul's 129* Not Enough: Shai Hope Leads West Indies to a Stunning 352 Chase

Who won the 3rd ODI?

West Indies, by 5 wickets, chasing down a target of 352 with 10 balls to spare in New Chandigarh.

Who won the series?

India, 2-1. They had already sealed the series with wins in the first two games, so this was a consolation victory for West Indies.

Who were the stars?

West Indies captain Shai Hope scored 162 not out, his 21st ODI century and his fifth against India. For India, KL Rahul hit 129 not out and Rohit Sharma made 92.

The Story: Three Years Later, Hope Gets His Answer

In August 2023, in Trinidad, India set West Indies a target of 352 in an ODI. West Indies collapsed to 151 and lost by 200 runs, and afterwards captain Shai Hope said that 350 was "a gettable total" on that pitch, even though his side had fallen well short.

On Saturday in New Chandigarh, India set West Indies 352 again. This time Hope went out and proved his point, batting through the whole chase for a magnificent 162 not out to lead his side to a 5-wicket win.

For readers new to the format: an ODI gives each team 50 overs to bat. A target of 352 means scoring at just over seven runs per over, which is a tall order against a strong bowling side. West Indies had already lost the series after India's record 406 chase in the second game, but they ended the tour on a high.

India Recover From a Disaster Start

India chose to bat and made the worst possible start. West Indies quick Jayden Seales removed captain Shubman Gill for 1 and then bowled Virat Kohli for a first-ball duck, with consecutive deliveries in the third over. India were 4 for 2, and only 28 for 2 at the end of the 10-over powerplay.

Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad rebuilt with a 137-run stand. Rohit made 92 before falling eight short of a century, and Gaikwad added 57.

Then KL Rahul took over. He was patient at first, then exploded at the end, finishing 129 not out off 87 balls with 10 fours and six sixes. India took 22 runs from the final over and finished on a strong 351 for 7. Seales was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 62.

Hope Leads From the Front

West Indies lost opener John Campbell early to Mohammed Siraj, but Hope settled in quickly. He added 109 with Amir Jangoo (67), until Jangoo was run out by a sharp throw from Virat Kohli.

Hope kept going. He reached his hundred off 104 balls, his second century in as many matches after his 104 in Guwahati, and his fifth ODI hundred against India. Few batters have enjoyed facing India in their own conditions as much: only South Africa's AB de Villiers has more ODI centuries against India in India. Solid support from Sherfane Rutherford (24) and Keemo Paul (44) kept West Indies on track. When Paul and Matthew Forde fell, West Indies still needed 62 from about seven overs.

That is when Hope cut loose. Alongside spinner Gudakesh Motie (19 not out off 14), he added an unbroken 62 off just 29 balls, scoring 40 of those runs himself off 16 deliveries. West Indies won with 10 balls to spare.

Turning Point

The match turned in the final 10 overs of the chase. With 62 needed and only five wickets left, India were favourites. But Hope, who had been batting steadily, suddenly found another gear, and Motie gave him the support he needed. India's young pace attack, including debutant Anshul Kamboj (0 for 82), struggled to stop the boundaries at the death, and West Indies finished the job comfortably.

Records and Milestones

  • Shai Hope's 162* was his 21st ODI century, and his sixth since the 2023 World Cup, the most by any batter in that period.
  • It was Hope's fifth ODI century against India, and his second in back-to-back matches in this series.
  • Only AB de Villiers has scored more ODI hundreds against India in India. Hope is now joint second on that list, alongside New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell.
  • KL Rahul's 129* came in a losing cause.
  • Anshul Kamboj made his ODI debut for India.
  • India won the series 2-1, after chasing 296 in the first ODI and a record 406 in the second.

Series result: India won 2-1.

It was a series built for batters. All three matches were won by the team chasing, every first-innings total was close to 300 or more, and West Indies posted their highest ever ODI total (405 for 7) in Guwahati, only for India to chase it down. Shai Hope finished the series with back-to-back hundreds, while India's top order produced the standout individual knock of the series in Gill's record-breaking double century.
