Can the World Cup Co-Hosts Make Their Own Qualifier? Namibia Chase Oman in League Two
What is at stake?
The top four teams in Cricket World Cup League Two win automatic places at the Cricket World Cup Qualifier, the last step before the 2027 World Cup. The bottom four must take the harder route through the Qualifier Play-off.
Who is already safe?
USA, Scotland and the Netherlands are mathematically certain to finish in the top four.
Who is fighting for the last spot?
Oman (31 points) and Namibia (29 points). Oman have more games left, so they are in control, but Namibia are still in the hunt.
The Story: The Long Road to the 2027 World Cup
For two and a half years, eight of cricket's leading Associate nations (countries just below the top tier of the sport) have been battling it out in Cricket World Cup League Two, a 50-over league that forms part of the road to the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
For readers new to this competition: each team plays 36 One Day Internationals over the cycle, in a series of three-team tours around the world. Every win is worth 2 points, and a no-result (usually a washed-out game) earns 1 point. With the season running until late December, the table is reaching its final shape.
The Table
| Pos | Team | Played | Won | Lost | NR | Pts | NRR |
| 1 | USA | 33 | 22 | 10 | 1 | 45 | +0.677 |
| 2 | Scotland | 36 | 19 | 10 | 7 | 45 | +0.710 |
| 3 | Netherlands | 32 | 17 | 11 | 4 | 38 | +0.334 |
| 4 | Oman | 28 | 14 | 11 | 3 | 31 | +0.018 |
| 5 | Namibia | 33 | 13 | 17 | 3 | 29 | -0.387 |
| 6 | Canada | 32 | 10 | 17 | 5 | 25 | -0.395 |
| 7 | Nepal | 32 | 11 | 19 | 2 | 24 | -0.089 |
| 8 | UAE | 30 | 8 | 19 | 3 | 19 | -0.847 |
Top four advance to the CWC Qualifier. Bottom four go to the Qualifier Play-off.
Who Is Safe?
USA and Scotland: Locked In
The USA and Scotland are level at the top on 45 points. Scotland have already finished all 36 of their matches, while the USA have three to play. Both are guaranteed a top-four place, so the only question left is who finishes first.
Netherlands: Safe Too
The Netherlands are on 38 points with four games left. Because every team plays 36 matches, we can work out the most points each team could still reach. No one below them can catch them except Oman, and the Dutch would need two teams to pass them to drop out of the top four. So they are mathematically safe.
The Race for Fourth: Oman vs Namibia
This is where the drama is.
Oman: In Control
Oman are fourth on 31 points, and crucially they have played only 28 matches. That leaves them eight games still to play, more than anyone else, partly because their tri-series in Nepal in March was postponed due to the conflict in West Asia.
The maths is simple for Oman. If they reach 36 points, no team below them can catch them. That means they need three more wins (or two wins and a washed-out game) from their eight remaining matches.
Namibia: Hoping for a Slip
Namibia are fifth on 29 points, but they have only three games left, which means their maximum possible total is 35. To finish fourth, they need to win as many of their games as possible and hope Oman struggle badly.
There is extra meaning for the Namibians. They are co-hosts of the 2027 World Cup, but unlike South Africa and Zimbabwe they did not qualify automatically. Missing the top four would send them into the tougher Qualifier Play-off, putting their dream of playing in their own World Cup at greater risk.
Canada, Nepal and the UAE: Long Shots
Canada (25), Nepal (24) and the UAE (19) are still alive in theory, but they would need a run of wins and a collapse from both Oman and Namibia. Realistically, the top-four door is closing for all three.
The Big Games Coming Up
These are the next League Two matches that will shape the race. All times are local, India (IST) and US Eastern (ET).
| Date | Fixture | Venue | Local Time | IST | ETT |
| Tue Oct 13 | Oman vs Nepal | Al Amerat, Oman | 10:00 AM | 11:30 AM | 2:00 AM |
| Tue Oct 13 | USA vs Namibia | Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas | 10:00 AM | 8:30 PM | 11:00 AM |
| Thu Oct 15 | Oman vs Canada | Al Amerat, Oman | 10:00 AM | 11:30 AM | 2:00 AM |
| Sat Oct 17 | Canada vs Nepal | Al Amerat, Oman | 10:00 AM | 11:30 AM | 2:00 AM |
| Mon Oct 19 | Oman vs Nepal | Al Amerat, Oman | 10:00 AM | 11:30 AM | 2:00 AM |
The key date is October 13. On the same day, Oman host Nepal and Namibia face the table-topping USA in Dallas. If Oman win and Namibia lose, the gap becomes four points with Oman still holding plenty of games in hand.
Oman's three home games in Al Amerat could all but settle the race. They still have more matches to come after October, with the league running until December.
Why It Matters
The top four go straight to the Cricket World Cup Qualifier, where the winner earns a place in the 2027 World Cup and the next three teams play in the "Super Series" in Windhoek for one more spot. The bottom four face the extra hurdle of the Qualifier Play-off, where teams also risk dropping out of League Two altogether.
For Associate nations, one 50-over World Cup can change everything, with more funding, more fixtures and more attention. That is why these autumn matches in Oman and Dallas carry so much weight.
