Robinson Does It Again: England Sweep Pakistan With a 194-Run Win at Lord's

By Cricket Daily

Ollie Robinson has authored one of the great comeback stories of the English summer. At Lord's, the recalled seamer took eight more wickets to inspire England to a 194-run win over Pakistan in the second Test, sealing a 2-0 series sweep and earning back-to-back player-of-the-match awards. On a seam-friendly surface, England were simply too good, and Robinson was the difference once again.

For newcomers, a series "sweep" means winning every match, and after their innings victory in the first Test, England have now brushed Pakistan aside twice in a row.

England grind out a first-innings lead

Winning the toss and batting, England were made to work hard for 290 on a lively pitch. It was a proper team effort rather than one big innings. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith top-scored with a busy 61, opener-turned-number-three Jordan Cox dug in for 55, and Gus Atkinson provided important lower-order impetus with 45. When

England slipped to 222 for 8, last man Josh Tongue's unbeaten 30 helped drag them to a competitive total.

Pakistan's attack kept plugging away, led by the excellent Mohammad Abbas, who finished with 4 for 73, with Mohammad Ali taking three. But 290 would prove far more than enough.

Robinson runs riot as Pakistan collapse

Pakistan's reply was a disaster. They were skittled for just 110, and the architect of their downfall was Robinson, who produced remarkable figures of 4 for 11 from 13 overs, six of them maidens. That is an economy rate of well under one run per over, the sort of suffocating spell that wins Test matches on its own.

Only opener Azan Awais offered any resistance, battling for 46, but he had almost no support. Jofra Archer chipped in with 3 for 26 and Josh Tongue took two as Pakistan, who lost Imam-ul-Haq to injury, subsided to a 180-run first-innings deficit. Captain Babar Azam, back in the side after missing the first Test, managed only 8, an early sign of a miserable match for the star batter.

Lawrence leads a tricky second innings

With a huge lead, England looked to bat Pakistan out of the game, and though they were bundled out for 208, it was more than enough. Recalled all-rounder Dan Lawrence played the standout innings with a fluent 54, and there was a useful 34 from Harry Brook and 31 from Emilio Gay.

Mohammad Abbas was again superb, this time claiming 5 for 57 to finish with nine wickets in the match, a fine personal effort in a losing cause. His reward was to set Pakistan a mammoth 389 to win, a target that always looked out of reach.

Shakeel fights, but Robinson finishes it

Chasing 389, Pakistan were quickly in trouble at 14 for 3, with Robinson again to the fore. But then came the innings of the match from Saud Shakeel. The left-hander played beautifully for 97, so nearly a deserved hundred, adding 97 with Shan Masood to give Pakistan brief hope.

Once Shakeel fell three short of his century, though, the resistance ended. Robinson returned to finish with 4 for 24, giving him eight wickets in the match for the second Test running, and 16 for the series. Josh Tongue took three as Pakistan folded for 194, handing England victory by 194 runs. Babar Azam's wretched game ended with a second-innings 6, a chastening return for the former captain.

What it all means

This is a statement series win for England's new era. The batting contributed down the order, the pace attack was relentless, and in Ollie Robinson they unearthed a match-winner whose recall now looks inspired. Sixteen wickets across two Tests, with two player-of-the-match awards, makes him the obvious candidate for player of the series and gives captain Joe Root's rebuilding side real momentum in the World Test Championship.

For Pakistan, it is a sobering tour. Bowled out for 171, 135, 110 and 194 across the series, their batting simply could not handle the moving ball, and even the return of Babar Azam brought no relief. Mohammad Abbas and Saud Shakeel apart, there were few positives, and plenty to ponder before their next assignment.

England win the series 2-0, and they mean business.
