For readers new to cricket: in a T20 International (T20I), each team bats for up to 20 overs (an over is six legal deliveries). A team wins by runs when it bats first and defends its total, and by wickets when it chases the target with batters still to come in.
1st T20I: Farhan Leads From the Front
Sri Lanka's Innings: Udara Fights Alone
Sri Lanka won the toss and batted, but they were 18 for 2 early. Naseem Shah removed captain Kusal Mendis in the first over, and debutant Mohammad Imran Randhawa got rid of Kamil Mishara.
Lahiru Udara carried the innings with 91 off 55 balls (11 fours, 1 six). He was given a life on 77, when Abrar Ahmed misjudged a high catch, so the first big drop of the series was actually Pakistan's.
No other Sri Lankan passed 23. Udara fell on the last ball of the 19th over, and Sri Lanka finished on 182 for 8. Pakistan gave away 29 extras, including 18 wides, a problem they will want to fix.
Pakistan's Chase: 70 in the Powerplay
Pakistan raced to 70 in the powerplay (the first six overs, when only two fielders are allowed outside the inner circle). Farhan and Sadaqat then added 92 in 52 balls for the second wicket.
Sadaqat reached 50 off 29 balls before falling at 146 for 2. Pakistan wobbled, losing four more wickets for 34 runs, including Farhan for 89 off 53. Khawaja Nafay (12 not out) saw them home with seven balls to spare.
Farhan was Player of the Match on his captaincy debut. "We needed to score 200+ on this pitch," said Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis afterwards.
2nd T20I: Sri Lanka Drop the Wrong Men
Pakistan's Innings: 215 for 3
This time Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl. It went wrong quickly.
Farhan was dropped twice, once in the fourth over, and made Sri Lanka pay with 73 off 44 balls (4 fours, 5 sixes). He and Sadaqat added 88 off 48 balls for the second wicket.
Then came the costliest miss of the series. Nuwan Thushara put down a return catch off his own bowling with Sadaqat on 44. Sadaqat added another 52 runs and finished on 96 off 51 balls, with 6 fours and 7 sixes, before holing out on the last ball of the innings.
With Hasan Nawaz (19 not out off 9), he added 72 off 31 balls for the third wicket. Pakistan scored 72 runs in their last 31 balls to reach 215 for 3.
Sri Lanka's Chase: Never in It
Needing almost 11 an over, Sri Lanka lost wickets steadily and finished on 133 for 7. Maheesh Theekshana top-scored with 32 not out, ahead of Chamindu Wickramasinghe (29), Kamindu Mendis (23) and Sineth Jayawardena (22).
Randhawa was outstanding again, taking 3 for 11 from his four overs. Salman Mirza took two wickets. Sadaqat was Player of the Match, in front of a reported record crowd of 17,535 at Rawalpindi.
Did the Drops Cost Sri Lanka the Series?
The Case For
In the 2nd T20I, the drops changed everything. Farhan was given two lives and made 73. Sadaqat was dropped on 44 and made 96. Those two scored 169 of Pakistan's 215 runs.
Had Thushara held the return catch, Pakistan would have been 2 wickets down with a new batter in. Even if Sri Lanka had then conceded a normal score from there, they would likely have been chasing something closer to 180 than 216. One report counted four dropped catches in the match.
The Case Against
The 1st T20I was not lost in the field. Sri Lanka were simply outbatted: Pakistan made 70 in the powerplay and chased 183 with an over to spare. Pakistan even dropped Udara themselves.
Sri Lanka's batting was the other problem. Across the two games, only Udara passed 32. Kusal Mendis admitted the 1st T20I total was about 20 runs short.
The Verdict
The drops did not lose the whole series, but they decided it. Without them, the 2nd T20I could have been a close contest and the series level going into Tuesday. Instead, Sri Lanka's fielding turned a hard chase into an impossible one.
