Match Report: West Indies Hit Back Again
India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl. It did not work out.
For readers new to cricket: in a T20 International (T20I), each team bats for up to 20 overs (an over is six legal deliveries). A team wins by runs when it bats first and the other side cannot reach its total.
West Indies' Innings: Hope Hits 102*
West Indies raced to 79 in the powerplay (the first six overs, when only two fielders may stand outside the inner circle). Jewel Andrew (21) went at 52 for 1, but Shimron Hetmyer smashed 33 off 12 balls in a stand of 58 off 24 with Hope.
Hope kept going and finished on 102 not out off 50 balls, with 4 fours and 9 sixes. He and Sherfane Rutherford (49 not out off 26) added an unbroken 91 off 43 balls for the fourth wicket.
West Indies hit 16 sixes and finished on 247 for 3. India's quicks struggled with their lines: Mayank Yadav and Arshdeep Singh each went for 52 from four overs and bowled 12 wides between them.
"Surface was holding more than we thought," Hope said afterwards.
India's Chase: Samson Fires, Paul Strikes
India matched West Indies early, scoring 80 in the powerplay. Sanju Samson blasted 56 off 23 balls (6 fours, 4 sixes).
Then Keemo Paul struck twice in the fifth over. He had Samson caught by Hetmyer at 60 for 1, then Ishan Kishan (6) at 67 for 2. Iyer (16) fell at 97 for 3.
Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie took two wickets in two balls in the 12th over: Abhishek Sharma (29), caught, and Naman Dhir, stumped by Hope first ball. India were 130 for 5.
Tilak Varma (43 off 25) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (41 off 20, 4 sixes) kept India alive with 70 off 32 balls. But Romario Shepherd removed Tilak at 200 for 6, and India needed 48 from 18 balls.
Turning Point: Paul's Three in Four Balls
In the 19th over, Paul ended the contest. He removed Nitish Kumar Reddy, bowled Prince Yadav first ball, and then had Axar Patel caught. India went from 212 for 6 to 213 for 9 in four deliveries.
Arshdeep Singh then retired hurt with discomfort in his left shoulder, with no batters left to come in. India's innings ended on 223.
Paul finished with 5 for 41, reported as the second-best figures by a West Indies bowler against India in T20Is, behind Obed McCoy's 6 for 17. "Slower balls were gripping tonight," he said.
"We didn't execute our lines and lengths well," admitted Iyer.
