The Story: South Africa on a High

South Africa come into the series straight after a 2-1 home Test series win over Australia, sealed by Simon Harmer's 10 wickets in Cape Town. The two Tests against Bangladesh count towards the ICC World Test Championship, and the last time Bangladesh toured South Africa for Tests, the hosts won 2-0.

For readers new to cricket:

  • A Test lasts up to five days, and each team bats twice.
  • In an ODI, each team bats for up to 50 overs.
  • In a T20I, each team bats for up to 20 overs.
  • D/N means a day-night match that finishes under lights, and N means a night match.

Storylines to Watch

Pace and bounce on the Highveld. Both Tests are on the Highveld, at Johannesburg and Centurion, where pitches traditionally help fast bowlers. Coach Shukri Conrad has said South Africa will focus on seam bowling, with Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and the returning Nortje leading the attack.

Hamza's return. Zubayr Hamza is back in the Test squad for the first time since February 2024, after scoring heavily in domestic cricket and for South Africa A against Bangladesh A.

Who misses out. David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne are not in the Test squad, and Lungi Ngidi is recovering from a hamstring problem.

Bangladesh's test of conditions. Bangladesh arrive after their Test series in the West Indies. South African pitches, with extra bounce, are a very different challenge from the slower surfaces they know at home.

England are next. South Africa host England in a three-Test series from December 17, so places in the Test side are up for grabs.
