The Story: The Best Players in the World, Back in Australia
The Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) is the world's longest-running women's franchise T20 competition, and Season 12 brings the eight Australian clubs back for five and a half weeks of cricket.
For readers new to the format: in T20 cricket each team bats for up to 20 overs (an over is six legal deliveries), so a match lasts around three hours. A franchise league is like club football: city-based teams made up of local players and overseas stars.
The Hobart Hurricanes are the team to beat. They beat the Perth Scorchers by eight wickets in last season's final at Bellerive Oval, chasing 138 with Lizelle Lee unbeaten on 77.
The season opens with a double-header at Junction Oval in Melbourne. The night game, Melbourne Stars vs Hobart Hurricanes, is the first WBBL match played under the ground's new permanent floodlights.
Cricket Australia has shaped this schedule around fans. There are more games from Thursday to Sunday, fewer games at neutral venues, and more than 55% of matches in prime time. Big Bash Leagues general manager Alistair Dobson said the club "can't wait to see our fans in iconic WBBL venues around the country."
How WBBL|12 Works
- League stage (40 matches): each of the eight teams plays 10 games. Teams do not play every opponent twice, so the draw is not perfectly even.
- Points table: the top four reach the finals. Net run rate (a measure of how quickly a team scores compared with its opponents) separates teams level on points.
- Finals:The Knockout (Dec 1): 3rd vs 4th. The loser is out.
- The Challenger (Dec 3): 2nd vs the Knockout winner.
- The Final (Dec 5): 1st vs the Challenger winner, at the top team's home ground.
Finishing first is a big prize: that team waits for an opponent and hosts the final.
