Seifert's Sizzling 72 Fires Manchester Super Giants to The Hundred 2026 Title

By Cricket Daily

Manchester Super Giants are champions of The Hundred. On a big night at Lord's, a stunning innings from Tim Seifert powered them to a five-wicket win over the Trent Rockets in the men's final, and the New Zealand wicketkeeper capped a brilliant tournament by being named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series. Chasing 159, the Super Giants got home with two balls to spare.

For anyone new to it, The Hundred is England's newest competition and its own distinct format. Instead of the usual 20 overs, each team faces exactly 100 balls, which makes for a fast, punchy contest that is over in a flash. In this final, that format produced a classic.

Trent Rockets recover to a fighting total

Batting first, the Trent Rockets were pushed around for long stretches but scrapped their way to 158 for 8 off their 100 balls. It was a total built on cameos rather than one big innings.

Aneurin Donald provided the early fireworks with a rapid 38 from 19 balls, and opener Ben Duckett chipped in with 31. But the Rockets kept losing wickets, slipping to 95 for 5, and it took a late surge to give their total some respectability. Lewis Gregory smashed 32 from just 16 balls, and with New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner holding firm on 20 not out and Craig Overton crashing a quick 11, the Rockets plundered enough at the death to reach 158.

The Super Giants' attack had kept them in check, led by Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad, who was outstanding with 3 for 33, with Sonny Baker taking 2 for 34. A total of 158 was competitive, but on this ground and against this batting line-up, it always felt a few short.

The Seifert show

Any doubt about the chase was blown away by Tim Seifert. The Super Giants opener produced one of the great final innings, blazing 72 from 38 balls with four fours and a remarkable seven sixes.

He came out swinging and never stopped, racing to a 66-run opening stand with Paul Walter in no time and taking the game away from the Rockets almost single-handedly. By the time captain Jos Buttler had added a breezy 23 and Seifert had brought up his fifty, Manchester were cruising and the result looked a formality.

Amir's fightback sets up a tense finish

To their credit, the Rockets did not go quietly, and Pakistan's Mohammad Amir made sure of that. The veteran left-arm quick produced a superb spell to drag his side back into the contest, finishing with 3 for 29. He removed the dangerous Seifert, then struck twice more to leave the Super Giants wobbling slightly at 156 for 5, with a few nerves suddenly creeping in.

But the target was too small and the platform too solid. Calm South African Leus du Plooy saw it through with an unbeaten 27, and Liam Dawson finished the job, sealing a five-wicket win with two balls remaining. Manchester's early charge had given them all the cushion they needed.

A double for Seifert

Tim Seifert was the obvious choice for Player of the Match after his match-winning 72, and he was also named Player of the Series for a campaign in which he was consistently destructive at the top of the order. It is the kind of tournament that changes a player's stock, and he leaves The Hundred as one of the most in-form batters in world franchise cricket.

What it means

For the Manchester Super Giants, this is a landmark title, the reward for building a squad packed with match-winners and getting the big moments right. For the Trent Rockets, it is the agony of finishing runners-up after fighting their way to a defendable total, only to run into Seifert at his brutal best.

There is a neat subplot too. Several of these players are about to swap Lord's for the Caribbean, with the Caribbean Premier League already under way. Seifert himself is bound for the St Lucia Kings, as is his final-night rival Noor Ahmad, so the form shown here will carry straight into the next tournament. For now, though, the night belongs to Manchester, and to a New Zealander who lit up Lord's.
