Match Report: The Heat Win the Battle of the Strugglers

For readers new to cricket: in a T20 match, each team bats for up to 20 overs (an over is six legal deliveries). A team wins by wickets when it chases down the target. In the WBBL, the batting team also gets a two-over Power Surge, when fewer fielders are allowed outside the circle.

Hurricanes' Innings: 13 for 3

Heat captain Georgia Redmayne won the toss and chose to bowl, and Lily Bassingthwaighte struck twice in two balls in the second over. She caught and bowled Lizelle Lee and bowled Chamari Athapaththu first ball. When she had Kate Pelle caught by Charli Knott, the Hurricanes were 13 for 3, and they made just 14 in the four-over powerplay.

Rachel Trenaman (25 off 33) and Heather Graham (21) rebuilt with 43, but Lucy Hamilton bowled Graham and Sarah Glenn bowled Trenaman. Orla Prendergast removed Chinelle Henry, and the Hurricanes were 72 for 6.

Maddy Green (24 off 22) and Hayley Silver-Holmes (12) added 26, and Hamilton took two more late wickets to finish with 3 for 24. The Hurricanes ended on 116 for 9.

Heat's Chase: O'Neil Finishes It

Chinelle Henry had Charli Knott, the centurion from the Heat's last game, caught behind for 6, but Grace Harris hit five fours in 24 off 16, and the Heat made 41 for 1 in the powerplay.

The Hurricanes fought back. Isabella Malgioglio bowled Harris, Graham bowled Prendergast, and in the 10th over Redmayne was run out by Linsey Smith, who then trapped Yastika Bhatia (22) lbw next ball. The Heat were 69 for 5.

Annie O'Neil steadied the chase. She added 20 with Hamilton, and after Graham had Hamilton caught, she and Sianna Ginger (10 not out) added an unbroken 30 off 24 balls. The Heat took 20 runs from their Power Surge. O'Neil hit five fours in 32 not out off 28, and the Heat won with 10 balls to spare.

Turning Point: Bassingthwaighte's Second Over

Losing Lee and Athapaththu in consecutive balls left the Hurricanes 6 for 2, and they made just 14 in the powerplay. They never got going, and 116 was not enough.
