India vs England 1st ODI 2026 Match Report: Axar Does It All at Edgbaston as India Win by Six Wickets

England's first ODI defeat at Edgbaston since 2014. India lead the series 1-0.

This is how it happened.

The Match

England 258 all out (47.5 overs) | India 262/4 (45.2 overs) Edgbaston, Birmingham | July 14, 2026 India won by 6 wickets Toss: England won, elected to bat

England Bat First: Root and Dawson Rescue a Collapse

England won the toss and chose to bat. The Edgbaston pitch offered early movement — conditions that Shubman Gill later described as "close to South Africa, the ball was kicking up, wasn't easy to score." Jasprit Bumrah was immediately menacing, conceding just eight runs from his first four overs.

England started well enough — 51 for no wicket at the end of the powerplay, Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell looking comfortable. Then Gurnoor Brar struck twice in the 13th over, removing Duckett for 45 and Bethell for 14. It began England's collapse.

Prasidh Krishna dismissed Jos Buttler for five and Sam Curran for a golden duck in the same passage. England were reeling at 93 for five after 20 overs. The middle overs had completely reversed the momentum.

Joe Root held England together. He made 76 not out off 76 balls — technically assured, unflustered by the chaos around him, accumulating steadily through the middle overs as partners came and went. Liam Dawson provided the crucial lower-order rescue, hitting a brilliant 61 to drag England towards 200 and then beyond. Root helped push the total on.

Axar Patel wrapped up the England innings, taking four wickets in the closing stages — removing Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, and Josh Tongue to bowl England out for 258 in 47.5 overs.

India Chase: Chaos, Then Calm, Then Axar

India's chase began with chaos and ended with composure.

Rohit Sharma went early — caught by Sam Curran for 11. Virat Kohli's return to the Indian ODI side was eagerly anticipated. He came in to significant fanfare. Jofra Archer dismissed him LBW for five, first ball after a review. The crowd's excitement became a groan. India were 2 down in the powerplay.

Shubman Gill steadied the innings. He played one of those calm, authoritative innings that have defined his leadership of this side — watching the ball carefully, rotating strike, building partnerships. He reached 80 before Josh Tongue's delivery struck him and he was forced to retire hurt. The blow was serious enough to rule him from the field. India were 160 for four, needing 103 more, with their captain in the dressing room.

Shreyas Iyer, who had been scratchy throughout, was run out by Harry Brook to give India a fourth wicket. KL Rahul came in and departed in three balls, removed by Tongue.

Axar Patel arrived. Washington Sundar stayed at the other end. What followed was one of the great ODI partnerships of the England summer.

They put on 102 unbeaten together. Axar reached his fifty in 39 balls — getting down on one knee to play a slog sweep off Will Jacks over midwicket. Washington brought up his own half-century shortly after. The two batters methodically dismantled an England attack that had no answer for them. Curran tried the moonball.

Tongue tried the short ball. Nothing worked.

India won with 27 balls to spare.

Man of the Match: Axar Patel

Four wickets with the ball. An unbeaten 57 with the bat. A match-winning 102-run partnership. The ESPNcricinfo fan rating after the match: 9.2 — top of the series after one game.

Axar did not just contribute — he defined the match in both innings. His four-wicket haul restricted England to a chaseable target. His fifty, when India were 160 for four and three recognised batters were back in the dressing room, finished the job. It was the performance of a genuine all-rounder at their best.

Gill's Post-Match Assessment

"When you see your middle and lower middle order score runs and finish the job, it gives confidence as a captain. It was about our combination. We have a youngish bowling attack. Our batting is more experienced than our bowling. So even if we had a target of 300-320, we back ourselves to chase that. Our bowling in the middle phase was good. We bowled the right areas, they got away at the end of the powerplay. We were put under pressure but how we came back and bounced back was important."

On the conditions: "The wicket then settled nicely."

What It Means

India go 1-0 up. England face a must-win in Cardiff on Thursday to keep the series alive. The return of Kohli for five and Rohit for 11 means India's top order remains untested — which is either a concern or a sign of how deep this batting unit goes, depending on your perspective. The fact that India can lose their captain to a retirement hurt at 160 for four and still win by six wickets tells you something about where this team is right now.

Cardiff is on Thursday. Match starts at 12:00 GMT.
